Fans Claim ‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ Posters Were AI-Generated
New promotional posters for the upcoming HBO Original series set in Maine have been released, and fans have some questions.
We get it—artificial intelligence, also known as AI, has gotten really good at almost everything. Creating artwork for something like movie posters is one area where it could easily be used. But just because you can doesn’t mean you should—and that’s exactly what fans are saying.

On Tuesday, September 30th, HBO released the first of what seems to be a series of retro-style posters for IT: Welcome to Derry.
The 60s-cartoon-style family walking through Derry drew plenty of attention, but fans also pointed out what looked like flaws, mistakes, or blemishes in the artwork.

Viewers were quick to point out blemishes in the poster, with signs suggesting parts of it were AI-generated, since there are still details that AI hasn’t quite perfected.
One big giveaway came when replies noticed the mother’s right hand had two thumbs and the older daughter’s leg direction looked unnatural the closer you examined it.
The biggest talking point in the replies was people asking who the artist behind the poster is, and if those details are ever released, we’ll let you know.
It’s also worth keeping in mind that while there are some clear anatomy errors in the artwork, this is IT and Derry, Maine—where things are never quite normal—so the flaws could even be intentional.

And there you have it! While AI-generated art has gotten really good, people have also gotten really good at spotting it—or at least they think they have.
What are your thoughts on these theories about IT: Welcome to Derry, which premieres on HBO Max on October 26, 2025? We’d love to hear from you! Feel free to join the conversation by messaging us on the app.
