So, given all of that, how do we know the numbers on who is moving to Maine and where they’re coming from?
Stacker used data from the U.S. Census Bureau to rank which states sent the most new residents to Maine. Additionally, the report considered broader moving trends noted by United Van Lines.

Alright, with that cleared up, what are the actual numbers showing where these new ‘Mainers’ are coming from?
According to Stacker and their report highlighting ‘States Sending the Most People to Maine,’ 8,663 people moved to Maine from Massachusetts in 2022, making up 20.82% of new residents who relocated from another state.
Massachusetts sent the most new residents to Maine.
The report from Stacker continues by showing New Hampshire with more than 5,000 movers, California with over 3,500, and both Florida and New York with nearly 3,000 each, rounding out the top five states sending people to Maine.

And there you have it! Based on these most recent numbers, Maine has been getting an influx of new folks who are ‘from away.’
