Duck Hunter in Brunswick Rescued From Mud Acting Like Quicksand
A man who was duck hunting at Wharton's Point in Brunswick got stuck in the mud and called 911 for help.
Mud Like Quicksand
According to a press release from the Brunswick Police Department, 31-year-old Matthew Alexander of Topsham got stuck pretty deep in mud while duck hunting. When he walked to retrieve the ducks, he sank waist-deep into the mud and couldn't get out. Just like quicksand, the more he struggled, the deeper we went.
Marine Patrol to the Rescue
When police found Matthew, they knew they would need help to get him out of the mud and called on the Marine Patrol airboat to rescue him. Two officers had to pull him out while fighting the strong suction of the mud.
By the time he was pulled out, he had been in the water long enough that he was taken to Mid Coast Hospital to get checked out. He was released later, so everything seems to be fine after this incident.
Reminder About Coastal Mud Flats
The Brunswick Police Department wants to remind everyone that when you are in coastal mud flats that they are very unstable. They have what are called "honey pots," which you can't see until it's too late and you find yourself stuck in the mud, that acts like quicksand, making you unable to get yourself out. The more you struggle, the deeper you go.
Luckily, this all turned out all right. Alexander even got his ducks.
