Maine has several Guinness World Records under its belt, like the world's largest collection of lunar and Mars meteorites, the record for the longest line of whoopee pies at a Portland Sea Dogs' game in 2023, and the tallest snowman, "Olympia," built in Bethel in 2008. However, there's one world record that Maine held for only a year.

If you've ever driven in the Casco or Raymond area, you likely have seen the massive broadcasting tower high above nearby Sebago Lake.

The large tower belongs to WGME 13 and stands on Tower Road at 1619 feet tall and can be seen from miles away.

At the time of its construction in 1959, the Guinness Book of World Records listed it as the tallest architectural structure in the world. That only lasted for a year, when a TV station in Missouri built a taller tower.

It was then listed as the tallest architectural structure in Maine, which it held for quite some time until the WTMW transmitter came down from Mount Washington, and a new tower was built in 2002 in West Baldwin.

WGME isn't the only broadcast station coming from the tower in Raymond. WBLM also transmits from the tower, giving it a large signal across over half of Maine and New Hampshire. WBLM moved to the tower when it switched frequencies in 1989, with WTHT, which had previously been on the tower.

Stunning Views From the Top of the Tower

With a tower that stands over 1600 feet tall, you can imagine what the views at the top are. This drone footage was taken by Dielectric, a company that builds and maintains broadcast equipment and antennas. They are located right near the base of the WGME tower, on Tower Road in Raymond.
