So Many Questions About A U-Haul On A Frozen Maine Lake
Wait, what, where, how, and most importantly why is there a Uhaul on a frozen Maine lake?
It's not every day (thank God) that you are called to rescue a person who crashed through the ice in a U-Haul early in the morning. The Southwest Harbor Fire Department responded to such a call and put up pictures and a post on Facebook about the incident.
The driver survived crashing through the ice on Echo Lake in Maine
The good news is that the driver was able to get out and call 911, as noted in the Facebook post,
Shortly after 4:30 am this morning (January 18, 2025) SWHFD (Southwest Harbor Fire Department) was requested for assistance by Mount Desert FD for a truck and person through the ice on Echo Lake. A 10 ft. U-Haul truck was driven from Ike's Point across Echo Lake for over 400 yards until it broke through the ice. The driver was able to get out of the truck and then called 911. MDFD firefighters responded, walked across the ice and carried the wet and cold person back to shore with SWHFD helping. The Maine Warden Service is working to remove the truck.

So, so many questions about a U-Haul on Echo Lake in Maine
The biggest question is why? They got 400 yards before falling through the ice! When you post on Facebook, you are bound to get endless theories and jokes. But it appears that the man was 75 years old and confused. He had no idea he was driving on a lake, where the thickness was only about 2.5 inches and where he broke through only an inch thick. Amazingly, he is going to be okay.
Thank you to the brave men and women who serve Southwest Harbor and Mount Desert and were put in a dangerous situation. Even if this had been a 'hold my beer' moment, they would act in the same way. As they would humbly tell you, it's their job.
