Yet again, a new scam has been making waves through Maine and targeting our Veterans. The Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services is urging folks to be warned, after reports of scam postcards showing up directly in their mailboxes. .

Check out the warning from their Facebook page, below.

It’s called the Veteran Giveback Program and it’s being offered on these postcards offering to enroll in a "savings program." This sounds generous but it is not real.

What is real is these scammers are trying to get Veterans to hand over personal information including finances, to open the door for them to steal your identity and money.

New Scam Targets Maine Veterans Through Fake Postcards

The most terrifying part of this is that it’s not a misspelled email or weird spam call, it’s coming through official old-fashioned mail, which makes vulnerable folks truly believe it is indeed the real deal. That is the part that makes this so very dangerous.

And the moment someone responds to the postcards, the scammers are off! They lure these people in by saying, let’s see if you are eligible, I’ll need the following information...

They then ask for Social Security numbers, details of bank info and any sensitive data they can get their grubby little hands on. Shame!

What is vital to know is that the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services is not at all affiliated with any type of “giveback” program” .

If you get one of these postcards, ignore it and then immediately report it. And if you have a family member or loved one that you think would receive this type of postcard, warn them.

Report any scam that is like this to the Bureau or contact the Consumer Protection Division through the Maine Attorney General’s Office. These scammers may be getting smarter but being informed is the best protection you can ask for.
