We Have a Date of When the New Traffic Lights in Windham, ME Turn On
New traffic lights have been installed at the intersection of Route 302 and Albion Road, but for several weeks have not been turned on. That's about to change soon, so be prepared.
Dangerous Intersection
There have been many accidents at this intersection due to several factors, including speed and blind spots. Traffic turning onto Alibion Road is often in a position where it's hard to see that fast-moving traffic when there is another vehicle across from them.
I live close enough to this area to be able to hear screeching tires and cars colliding when the windows are open on a nice, warm day. So the installation of these traffic lights is very much needed.
From Above
You can see in the above Google Maps satellite view the configuration of the intersection that has been a problem. The traffic lights have been installed, but there was a hold-up in getting the equipment needed to operate the traffic lights.
Technology has evolved quite a bit from the days when traffic lights simply ran on timers, unlike today's traffic lights, which use cameras to be able to see traffic and adjust the lights based on that traffic.
When Do the Traffic Lights Get Turned On?
There's finally a date for when the traffic lights go live. September 2, 2025. Crews are still working on the intersection with a new traffic pattern, fresh-painted turning lanes and arrows, and doing the work to get the equipment that controls the lights up and running.
There are plenty of warning signs already up reminding drivers of the change in the traffic pattern, but be prepared and remember that you may have to stop.
