If you have yet to rail bike, you're missing out on a fun activity that lets you explore the same route trains used to follow while taking in the gorgeous scenery as you pedal on the rails.

What is Rail Biking?

With more and more rail lines being abandoned or pulled up entirely, it's nice to see that some of these rails are still available for this unique form of recreation and exercise.

The above picture is of a rail bike that my girlfriend Michele and I rode several years back, and it was a blast. Being a train fan brings that out of me.

The rail bike is just a simple frame with pedals for two occupants or more. Those pedals turn the wheels on the rail bike, which are the same wheels that are used today on modern locomotives.

Revolution Rail

There's one company that operates several rail biking trips in New York, New Jersey, Colorado and right here in Maine. Revolution Rail has two rail biking locations.

The first is in Dedham, Maine which gives riders a spectacular view along the shore of Green Lake. The second is at the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport with their cooperation.

There are also two locations in New Hampshire, not operated by Revolution Rail which include Granite State Railbikes in Laconia and Scenic Railriders in Concord, which is the one that Michele and I rode back in 2020. We loved it.

The fall season is a great time to take a ride on a rail bike, before the snow falls.
