I Think I’ve Found The Longest Wait at a Maine Traffic Light
I'm usually not one to complain about waiting at a traffic light, but this one in Biddeford has to be one of the longest waits for a green light in all of Maine.
Back in My Day
Growing up in South Paris, we had just one traffic light in town. It's at the intersection of Main, Paris, Alpine, and Fair streets, right near Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School. It looked close to what you see above.
Back then, there were no smart traffic lights. It wasn't until well into the late 80s and early 90s that traffic lights were converted to be able to monitor traffic and change signals to keep traffic moving smoothly.
This fairly new traffic light, installed in Biddeford, acts like it's 1970 again.
I picked up my son on Thursday at UNE, since he lost the lottery for a parking spot on campus. We went and played pinball in Saco at Maine Silverball Tavern.
On the way to pick him up, I sat at this traffic light at the intersection of Main Street and Water Street, just on the other side of the bridge between Saco and Biddeford. I'd swear it had no idea what traffic was where, acting just like a 1970s traffic light.

I timed it. I sat there at a red light and a red left turn arrow for over 3 minutes. I know that doesn't sound like a lot of time, but it sure feels it when there's no traffic coming in any of the other directions. With my luck, if I ran the red light, a police officer would be right behind me to nab me for it.
Has anyone else been stuck at the traffic light for what seems like forever? What traffic light in Maine do you think has the longest wait?
