On a beautiful fall day in Swanville a group of Mainers went on a journey, to discover the massive colossal glaciers that once created Maine’s landscape, according to News Center Maine.

The Belfast group was left by retired geologist Chris Mattson.

They explored the Oak Hill Granite Quarry.

Discover Maine’s Ancient Glacial Past in Swanville

Chris pointed out ridges and bedrock that was left behind by the Laurentide Ice Sheet saying,

“The glacier came through here 10,000 years ago,” NewsCenterMaine

He has traveled from Greenland to Canada all in search for metals and diamonds. He’s like a real Maine adventurer that has shared his global experience with everyone he can.

If you are looking for an amazing day trip that combines history, nature, and geology, the Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition outings will give you just that.

The group was in awe and marveled at how much quarrying was done and still sometimes is, by hand.

This Quarry was active from the late 19th to the mid-20th century. He showed everyone firsthand how glaciers shaped the land.

This leaves us wondering, what it all looked like 10,000 years ago.
