Popular Travel Site Names Maine’s Baxter State Park One of the Best in the Country
Maine's largest state park has gained some serious positive attention from a popular travel guide.
The website Thrillist recently posted an article on the best state parks to visit in America. Excitingly, Maine's Baxter State Park was among the ones selected for this prestigious list. That's quite the accomplishment for one of Maine's premier destinations, especially considering the site only selected a total of 36 parks.
Located in Piscataquis County in North-Central Maine, Baxter State Park is a 200,000+ acre playground for outdoor adventurers and nature lovers. The park is known for its pristine waters, beautiful scenery, world class hiking, unique wildlife, and outstanding camping.
Baxter is also home to many of Maine's tallest peaks, including Mount Katahdin (the northern tip of the Appalachian Trail), Baxter and Hamlin Peaks, North and South Brother, the Traveler Loop, Double Top, and many others. And many are easily connected by the park's trail system. It truly is a hiker's playground.
Here is a little of why Thrillist included Baxter State Park in its prestigious list.
...the domain of a killer variety of wildlife, from hawks to black bears who make their home amid the park's peaceful lakes and waterfalls. The park is void of paved roads, running water, and electricity, so this is your chance for the full Thoreau experience.
The "full Thoreau experience" is such a perfect way to explain a trip in Baxter. You really do feel like you have stepped back in time when there. It's quiet, beautiful, clean, and remote. Quite frankly, it's perfect.
Baxter truly is a perfect example of everything that is great about a park. It's beautiful, tranquil, and versatile. It's truly a Maine classic.
Baxter can also gloat for being the only state park in New England selected on Thrillist's list. Should a few more have been selected? Probably. I could certainly make a case for New Hampshire's amazing Franconia State Park or Maine's Popham Beach State Park. However, it's just Baxter that ultimately got the recognition.
Congratulations to Baxter for making this exclusive list. It's wonderful to see one of Maine's most beautiful resources getting the attention it deserves.
