
The Biggest Towns in Maine Cover Hundreds of Square Miles
Maine is an enormous state, filled with vast stretches of untouched wilderness. There’s something uniquely Maine about driving through remote areas and spotting signs for places like “T2 R9” and other mysterious territories.
That’s part of what makes the Pine Tree State so special. We embrace the peace, quiet, and wide-open spaces. In some parts of Maine, you can drive for 25 minutes and still be in the very same town.
How Large are Towns Here in Maine?
Maine also has some seriously large towns. In fact, 48 of the state’s municipalities have a land area of 50 square miles or more. That’s an impressive number for the Pine Tree State.
While looking through this list, I became very interested in where the largest towns are located. So, I put together a ranking of the 20 largest towns in Maine.
While you’ll find them spread across 11 of Maine’s 16 counties, it’s no surprise to see a significant number located in the northern part of the state. Aroostook, Penobscot, and Piscataquis counties are all well represented. However, the western foothills also make a strong showing.
What are the Largest Maine Towns by Area?
The largest town in Maine is Allagash. It also happens to be the only town in the state with an area larger than 100 square miles — 128.6 square miles, to be exact. The rest of the list showcases a great variety of towns across Maine, each with its own unique identity.

Below, you can see Maine’s 20 largest towns by land area. The data comes from the United States Census Bureau, using statistics from the 2010 Census. Unincorporated territories and plantations were excluded from this article.
