There are few things better in this world than adopting a shelter pet.

The bond between you and your shelter pet is unmatched by anything else imaginable. I can tell you this because I’ve been adopting pets throughout my entire life. Am I bragging when I say that? Of course, I am.

Shelter Pets are the Best Option for a Loving Family

Shelter pets need homes and loving families just as much as designer and purebred animals. And, at least in my experience, they bring a level of love and devotion that will blow you away. I swear, even my rescue cats at least acknowledge my existence.

You’ll never find a bigger advocate than me when it comes to adopting a pet—and that’s why it pains me to read that shelter adoptions are down in Maine.

Maine Animal Shelters are Filling Fast, Forever Homes Needed

According to WGME, many shelters are filling up faster than usual, with too few adoptions occurring.

The TV station spoke to leaders at the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland and found that a major reason is the rising cost of living, which is sadly leading to more pet surrenders than usual.

This is absolutely heartbreaking, to put it mildly. I will never judge someone who has to surrender a pet. I’m sure 99.9% of those who do have perfectly valid reasons. That’s not where our attention needs to be. We need to focus on getting these good boys and girls adopted.

So, with that said, here is my plea to all of you: please consider a shelter pet as your next pet.

First off, I’m not saying that adoption should be the only option. I’m just here to give you all the reasons why you should seriously consider it. Got it? Good.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals lists 10 incredible reasons why adopting a pet is not only great for the animal, but also for the owner. Here they are:

1. You save more than one life – By adopting, you're not only giving a pet a home, but also creating space at the shelter for another animal in need.
2. You’re giving a second chance to a rescue – These pets never forget your kindness; their gratitude is unforgettable.
3. Unconditional love – You’ll experience a kind of love you’ve never felt before.
4. Your pet can help you stay active – More walks are in your future! Even cats will keep you on your toes.
5. You get to spoil your adopted pet – Who doesn’t love shopping for toys, treats, and adorable outfits?
6. It can increase social interactions – People are drawn to rescue pets and their stories; you’ll make connections.
7. You’ll have a lifelong friend – They’ll never leave your side. Even the cats try to be civil.
8. Life gets a whole lot more fun – Enough said.
9. You’re pushing back against cruel breeding practices – Adopting helps reduce the demand for unethical breeding.
10. Your pet can help you de-stress and relax – Reconnect with joy and calm through the companionship of your new best friend.

See? There are plenty of great reasons to adopt your next rescue pet right now. What are you waiting for? Just think about the positive impact you’ll be making—not just for the shelter, but also for your own well-being.
