Who Got Hit the Hardest? Maine’s First Storm Snow Totals Revealed
Hey, we might have a white Christmas. Might.
What a beautiful sight it was to watch the snowfall and then wake up to even more fresh snow. While it wasn’t the strongest of storms, it was a fine introduction to what will hopefully be a nice, snowy season. And now, we can finally cross-country ski again.
The majority of Maine received somewhere between 3" and 8" of snow. I would characterize the storm as significant, especially given that a decent amount fell during the day, making commutes very tricky.
What Maine Towns Saw the Most Snowfall During This First Storm?
Let’s take a look at some of the snowfall totals from around Maine, courtesy of our friends at the National Weather Service.
Madrid – 8.1"
Congrats to the Franklin County town—it was the only place in Maine that reached the 8" mark. I mean, somewhere had to hit that milestone, right?
Here’s the rest of the Top 5:
Temple – 6.5"
Kingfield – 6.2"
Fryeburg – 6.0"
Greene – 5.9"
Here’s how some of the cities fared in this past storm:
Portland – 3.0"
Lewiston – 5.5"
Bangor – 1.3"
Augusta – 4.4"
Skowhegan – 4.3"
These are some decent initial totals for Maine, especially in the south. Any snow before the Christmas holiday is a welcome sight, especially for the industries that rely so heavily on it. It would be great to have a true snow year for all those ski mountains, Nordic ski and snowmobile centers, and all those outfitters.
Is More Snow on the Way?
According to The Weather Channel, Maine could see a little more snow as early as next week. There are a few potential snow events midweek. However, some areas of the state could see rain instead, which is exactly what nobody wants to hear. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what the future holds.

Hopefully the future is a heck of a lot of snow from now until March.
