This Outraged Mainer Is So Mad About the Hearts of Pine Soccer Game Noise
Congratulations are in order for the Portland Hearts of Pine.
The new soccer club may have broken a record—and I’m not talking about anything that happened on the pitch.
Maine's New Soccer Team is Already Creating A lot of Buzz
According to the Portland's 311 Page, Hearts of Pine already received its first noise complaint…after their very first game at Fitzpatrick Stadium.
Well, that didn’t take long.
Listen, I’m all for keeping things civil and calm for everyone, but the person who sent this complaint really seems like they just wanted to complain about something.
I was at the game. Was it loud? No.
Music was played from 4 to 6 p.m., during halftime for about 15 minutes around 7 p.m., and briefly after the game around 8 p.m. The sound could be heard outside the stadium, but it was very faint. I remember hearing it, while walking to the game from a few blocks away. It was far from being a "nuisance."
The game itself was not loud. I could barely hear the drums being played by some fans just a few sections away from me.
Listen, I’m trying to be nice here, but it’s simply ridiculous to already be complaining about a non-issue. Ozzy Osbourne wasn’t playing a show at Fitzpatrick the other night.
Also, this complainer did choose to live in a city. Cities are not quiet. They have loud cars, lots of sirens, fireworks, sporting events, airplanes, helicopters, drunk people, and general riffraff. Nothing will ever change that. And, as Portland grows, it won't be getting quieter anytime soon.
However, the beauty of Maine is that you can definitely find quiet.
Maine is Blessed with Many Remote Areas Filled with Peace and Quiet
There are entire counties in Maine you could choose to live in if you're looking for peace and quiet. The only thing that might be loud are guys doing donuts on county roads in the middle of the night. I mean, sometimes you just gotta squawk some tires, dude.

Noise Complaints Are Not New in Portland, Maine
Portland is no stranger to noise complaints. It is, after all, a city, so that's not surprising. It’s also a city that welcomes outdoor events, including a short run of concerts once held at the Maine State Pier. Eventually, complaints became too much for the city to handle, and the Pier lost those shows.
However, a soccer game with some music is a far cry from live rock concerts in the heart of downtown. I’d even go so far as to say the two aren’t really comparable. I'd be surprised if the city's sound ordinance committee got involved with this one.
I'm not trying to be mean, but these noise complaints are just frivolous. And it really begs the question: is it actually about something else? I'll save the speculation for later.
All I’ll say is this, I’m already looking forward to the next Hearts of Pine home game. The atmosphere was as electric as I’ve ever seen in this state. Maine is absolutely loving this new venture, so maybe it’s time to embrace it, not fight it.
