Explore These Beautiful Maine Lighthouses That are Close to Portland
There’s nothing like the pure beauty of a lighthouse. These iconic structures remain strong and steadfast through changing seasons and good ol’ Maine weather.
Our wonderful state is certainly no stranger to these historic protectors of seafarers. In fact, Maine still has 65 lighthouses standing today.
Maine's Lighthouses All Have Wonderful Character
While Portland Head Light gets the majority of the national buzz, the other 64 are all special in their own way. Many have been guiding travelers for over 100 years. Some are open to the public for tours, while others can only be seen from a boat cruise.
Each one has its own story and unique character, making them beloved by both Mainers and tourists alike.
Portlanders are lucky, considering how many lighthouses sit within a short distance, 11 within an hour’s drive.
Many, like Portland Head Light, Spring Point, and Two Lights, have been major tourist destinations for decades. However, there are others that would catch the interest of any visitor or lighthouse enthusiast.

Some of the lighthouses around Portland are open to the public seasonally.
Portland Head Light and Spring Point Light also feature museums and gift shops. I strongly recommend researching your options before visiting.
While lighthouses still serve a purpose for those at sea, every one of Maine’s is now automated. The last to make the switch was Goat Island Light, just south of Portland, which officially became automated in 1990 — marking the end of the manned lighthouse era in Maine.
