Maine Skiers Celebrate as Sugarloaf Launches Its 75th Season This Weekend
’Tis the season for shredding and carving up those slopes.
For all you Mainers eager for cool air and fresh powder, here’s some news to get excited about: ski season is officially here.
It's hard to believe we’ve already reached another ski season, but here we are—and I’m sure many of you can’t wait.
It always amazes me how much we collectively complain about winter yet still love getting outside and playing in the snow. I guess we Mainers will never lose that kid inside of us. Though, to be fair, we kind of complain about everything.
So, it’s time to swap out the golf clubs for ski boots and get your gear tuned up. Maine’s stunning slopes are calling, and one of the most iconic resorts is just about ready to flip the open sign.
When Does Sugarloaf Open for the Season?
The legendary Sugarloaf has officially announced its opening day for this Friday, November 21. It will kick off its 75th year of operation—an astounding milestone. The resort had tentatively set this weekend as the goal, and they’re sticking to it.

Ever since the first trail was cut back in 1950, Sugarloaf has been one of the true ski gems of the Northeast. It attracts visitors from far and wide with its massive terrain, iconic snowfields, and stunning natural beauty. Experts can even enjoy above-treeline glades—rare for East Coast skiing. As the second-tallest mountain in Maine, it can get pretty gnarly up there.
Over the years, the mountain has added many other outdoor activities, including Nordic skiing, fat biking, tubing, and even cat skiing. And yes, there’s plenty of après-ski options, too.
Sugarloaf is Celebrating its 75th Year of Operation
Sugarloaf is also inviting people to share their favorite memories and stories, which will be featured throughout this 75th-anniversary season as part of the celebration of its incredible legacy. You can find more info on the resort’s website.
Sugarloaf will join Sunday River, which opened last week, in kicking off the season. Saddleback Mountain is likely not far behind.
Happy shredding.
