I know we all love to trash social media, and for good reason. It certainly has its negatives.

However, it can also be quite a bastion of awesomeness. Like this incredible bit of history I found out about recently. Check this out.

Finding Amazing History on Social Media Why the Medium Was Built

I was strolling through Facebook the other day when I came across a post that absolutely blew my mind, and I really don't think it's too hyperbolic to say that. I mean, just read this.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

This is an absolutely UNREAL bill. Could you even imagine being at UMass for this? It is simply incredible. I can't even describe how much this lineup means to me. I have seen nearly all of these bands in person. Heck, I even shared the stage with two of them back in my playing days. This is just the most perfect lineup for an ’80s or ’90s kid, especially one from New England.

Let’s break this down.

What Bands Played The Legendary UMASS Rock Concert in 1992?

Beastie Boys: One of the most important groups of their generation. This genre-bending band opened up a whole new world of music to generations of kids. The Boys combined rock, rap, metal, punk—even some techno—and threw it all out there. Plus, as the post points out, they were going out for the first time with instruments, completely changing their live game. Just unimaginable how amazing it must have been.

Sadly, I never got a chance to see them live. I was supposed to at Foxborough back in the day, but the tour ended up being canceled.

Phish: What can you say about Phish that hasn't already been said? Amazing musicians, incredible songs, and some of the best live performances you will ever see. Heck, who isn't having FOMO with all these amazing videos of them playing at Sphere in Vegas right now?

I’ve been lucky enough to see Phish a few times and have tickets for their Fenway shows this summer.

I know it’s easy to hate on Phish, especially if you are anti–jam band. But I’m telling you—their live shows are life-altering.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones: I mean, these guys were New England royalty. They had so many incredible albums before they hit the mainstream with the single “The Impression That I Get.” The Bosstones were always high energy on stage and never left you wanting more.

I was lucky enough to open for them at the University of Southern Maine back in the early 2000s with my band. That’s a day I’ll never forget.

Fishbone: Talk about bringing the energy—well, that’s exactly what this band did and continues to do. Angelo Moore is one of the most underrated frontmen ever, and if you’ve ever seen them live, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Thankfully, I had a chance to see them up close and personal at Stone Coast Brewing in Portland (RIP), one of the greatest rock clubs ever. They put on a show for the ages and honestly blew away the headliner, Maceo Parker.

Chucklehead: Just a straight-up funky band from Boston. These dudes legit ripped. Chucklehead had some great albums and put on a very funky live show.

This is another group my band got to play with. Strangely enough, it was for Waynflete’s Project Graduation, which was held at the Racquet and Fitness Center (now Apex Sports).

Rippopotamus: I remember the name, but very little else. They were another funk band from the Amherst area. Rip found a lot of success in the coming years in Massachusetts, even winning the 2001 Boston Phoenix/WFNX Readers Poll Award.

fIREHOSE: This alternative band got in early in the genre and had quite the cult following. They played nearly 1,000 shows together before calling it a career in 1994. However, they did briefly reunite in 2012.

Just a legendary lineup for this concert at UMass. I can't imagine many other colleges during that time had epic one-day lineups like this. I saw some great bands at West Virginia University, but nothing even remotely close to how stacked this was.

A big thanks to Micke Mansfield for posting this tidbit on social media. It’s always great to learn about cool stuff like this—and then get really jealous that you weren’t there. Of course, I was 12 at the time, so I’m not sure my parents would have given the go-ahead.

Keep rocking, fam.
