Canadian Tourism to Maine Already Down to Start 2026
You could argue that Maine is stuck behind a rock and a hard place when it comes to diplomatic relations between the United States and Canada.
A strained relationship between the two countries based on tariffs and the suggestion that Canada become the 51st state has left a bad taste in the mouth of many Canadians.
That led to a significant drop in tourism from Canada to Maine last year.
The Maine Turnpike Authority reported a substantial drop in regular Canadian traffic in 2025 while taxable retail sales from Canadian tourism also saw a drop throughout the year.
Those hoping that 2025 was simply going to be an outlier for Canadian tourism to Maine may want to reconsider because 2026 has started even worse.
Canadian Tourism to the United States Dropped Sharply For January 2026
After some declines that were highlighted in 2025, a new year has started off poorly for Maine businesses hoping to see increased Canadian tourism in 2026.
According to the CBC, Canadian tourism to the United States was down 22% in January 2026 versus January 2025.
It's a bad omen for Maine that Canadian tourism continues to decline based on diplomatic relations as well as the economy.
Last year, Maine calculated that it saw about one million less Canadian tourists as it did in 2024. If the start to 2026 is any sign, this year could be much worse.
Maine is Trying to Win Canadian Tourism Back With Ad Campaigns
Maine has been hopeful that despite strained relations between the U.S. and Canada that the state itself can win some tourists back for 2026.
Maine has launched an ad campaign designed to reassure visitors from Canada that Vacationland hasn't changed and that Canadians and their tourism dollars are still very much welcome in the state.
Will it be effective? As the warmer months arrive, there will be signs. For better or for worse.
