Coming out of the pandemic, it may have seemed like going to the movies was going to be a thing of the past for a lot of people in southern Maine.

That's because the most prominent movie theater franchise in the state, Cinemagic, had decided to cease operations and close down many of the theaters throughout the state that people frequented.

Since that Cinemagic closure, a lot has changed. Apple Cinemas took over operations in both Westbrook and Saco. Recently, Entertainment Luxury Cinemas took over the empty theater in South Portland by the Maine Mall. And as the previews often say, there's more coming soon.

According to the Portland Press Herald, Cinemark has agreed to a deal that will see them open their first Maine location in Westbrook as part of the Rock Row development. That isn't a new development. What is new, is that the next phase of development has a timeline and that Cinemark plans to open sometime in 2026.

If you've visited or driven by Rock Row recently. you'll notice some substantial construction approaching completion. Phase two of the massive project has seen medical buildings, a parking garage and additional infrastructure put into place over the last year plus.

Phase two will be the new home for New England Cancer Specialists as well as the Dempsey Center. New England Cancer Specialists has announced that the currently timeline for their grand opening is February of 2025.

That will allow Rock Row to begin moving to phase three of their development plan. That is planned to include a food hall, some residences as well as an entertainment complex that will include the first Cinemark location in Maine.
