Where Experts Say You Should Keep Your AC During Extreme Heat in Maine
Summer has arrived in Maine and with it has come a mini heat wave. Temperatures typically top out in the mid 70's throughout June but Maine is in the midst of several days where temperatures will approach 90 degrees and beyond.
With heat reaching extreme levels, most people will turn to the comfort of air conditioning to reduce humidity in their living spaces and keep the temperature at a reasonable level.
But what one person might consider a reasonable temperature isn't necessarily what a heating and cooling expert agrees with.
Experts Say That Your Air Conditioning Should Be Set to 78 Degrees in a Heat Wave
According to USA Today, experts from energy companies around the company agree that 78 degrees is the best setting for your air conditioner amidst any significant heat wave.
Experts claim that temperature is the best setting to balance two components. Energy usage as well as cost. Setting your AC below 78 will likely cause additional energy usage that will hit your wallet harder. Especially with many energy companies moving towards increasing billing during peak summer usage hours.
While 78 may sound obscenely warm, some experts believe you should turn your thermostat up to 82 in the overnight hours to conserve even more energy.
Most People in Maine Prefer to Set Their Air Conditioning to 72 Degrees
Despite the expert recommendations, people in Maine and across the United States prefer to keep their air conditioning thermostat set much cooler.
A survey done by Consumer Reports indicates the majority of people prefer 72 degrees as their average AC setting. People in high humidity areas tend to push their air conditioning even harder and set the thermostat at 70 degrees.
The battle between comfort and cost rages on.
