What to Expect When the Rink at Thompson’s Point in Portland, Maine, Opens
Repeat visitors to the Rink at Thompson's Point in Portland, Maine, were disappointed last year when organizers announced there would be no ice skating for the winter. The flip side of that announcement was that significant improvements were planned for the outdoor rink with a return the following year.
That following year has arrived, and the grand reopening of the Rink at Thompson's Point is nearly here. If you plan on visiting, you'll notice several changes have been made that should improve the experience for everyone.
The Rink Is Not So Weather-Dependent
One of the frustrating elements of having an outdoor rink is that the weather can dictate whether you're open or closed. The Rink at Thompson's Point has fixed that issue by installing a state-of-the-art chilling system to ensure solid ice, even when weather conditions are not ideal.
Not only that, the Rink at Thompson's Point will have a zamboni to clean up the ice, which allows them to offer a slew of new activities for the 2023-2024 season. There will still be possible weather delays or closures, but nothing like in seasons past.
Lots of New Options for This Year
With the enhanced cooling system, the Rink at Thompson's Point plans to utilize their ability to be open more consistently. The Rink at Thompson's Point plans to have a regular schedule for daily public skates, as well as skating lessons for those ready to learn.
Additionally, the Rink at Thompson's Point plans to pick-up pond hockey as a regular offering, with a schedule on that coming soon.
Enhanced Offerings Around the Rink
Another key factor in the Rink at Thompson's Point being closed last season was the need to improve the offerings surrounding the rink at the Depot Pavilion. The food and beverage center has become permanent with an expanded menu of choices for visitors.
Another significant addition is the skate center that will offer skate rentals, as well as skate sharpening services.
The Rink at Thompson's Point expects to be open around Christmas this year.
