For the last handful of years, people throughout the state of Maine have complained about one particular bug that seems to want to make itself at home.

That would be the brown marmorated stink bug, a rather ghoulish looking that features a shield-shaped body and an unappealing brown color.

It's an invasive species that wasn't prominent in Maine until just a few years ago. Now? They've become unwanted house guests for thousands across the state.

And like a horror story from Stephen King, they're about to become pushy about their winter accommodations.

Stink Bug Activity Increases in the Fall Throughout Maine

While the brown marmorated stink bug can be an annoying house guest throughout the spring and summer, their activity really begins to increase in the fall.

They're typically found around homes that have substantial fruit trees, gardens or other plants.

Like many other creatures, they prefer a warm environment during the winter. So while they may stop by in spring and summer, stink bugs will try to make your home their winter residence during the fall.

How to Prevent or Remove Stink Bugs From Your House

According to Maine.gov, the best way to prevent the brown marmorated stink bug from entering your home during any season is to seal any and all cracks around your home where they may be able to get in.

In the warmer months, keep doors close and screens in your windows.

If the stink bugs do take up residency, the best way to remove them is with a vacuum. Remember to empty the vacuum outside of your house and continue the process until all the stink bugs are removed.
