Maine and New Hampshire Have the Lowest Crime Rates in the US
New Hampshire and Maine are not just about stunning fall foliage and killer lobster rolls; we also boast some of the lowest crime rates in the entire U.S. If you’re tired of hearing about crime stats that sound like they’re out of a crime-drama movie script, these two states are where you want to be.
Let's start with the kings of low crime. According to a recent report from US News and World Report, Maine ranks #1 lowest overall when it comes to crime rate. As a Mainer, this is quite comforting to hear. However, I feel like there has been more crime reported in recent months than normal. I wasn't able to find the range of dates used for the 2024 stats, so it will be interesting to see where we rank on the list for 2025.
Next door in New Hampshire, it’s more of the same good news. US News and World Report stated that the Granite State clocks in at #2 with the overall lowest crime rate in the US. The peaceful communities and picturesque views means you can enjoy life without worrying too much about your safety.
Now, let’s flip the script and talk about New Mexico—basically the opposite end of the spectrum. With one of the highest crime rates in the nation, their numbers are a stark contrast to our chill corner of the country. So if you’re considering a move and want to avoid the high-crime drama, you may want to avoid New Mexico.
In short, if you’re looking for low crime and high serenity, New Hampshire and Maine are pretty relaxed. You might find that your biggest problem is choosing between the scenic coastline and serene mountains, but either way, one is never too far away from the other.
