Sleep Experts Urge Mainers Not to Run Fans Overnight
Summer has arrived in Maine and the forecast over the next several days looks rather toasty. For many throughout the state, that means turning on the air conditioners and fans and attempting to stay cool.
Lots of people in Maine like to sleep with a fan on throughout the year. Whether that be for noise, air flow or just to maintain a cool breeze while trying to get as much restful sleep as possible.
But several sleep experts are urging people in Maine to consider the risks versus the benefits of running fans throughout the overnight hours. They may actually be causing you more harm than good.
Indoor Fans Circulate Allergens Just As Much As Air
For those that run hot in the overnight hours, indoor fans circulating air is a must. But if you're someone who suffers from allergies or carries a disease like asthma, circulating that air for comfort may actually be doing you harm.
According to Express, unless you consistently clean your room and fan daily, those indoor fans circulate just as much dust, pollen, and other allergens that can lead to worse sleep based on heavy breathing, nose and eye irritation and a scratchy throat.
Indoor Fans Can All Cause Serious Skin, Eye and Nasal Issues
Beyond just the things you may not realize you're inhaling from indoor fans while sleeping, constant air flow onto your skin, eyes and through your nasal passages can cause problems too.
As Mattress Next Day explains, the main probably is dryness. If you find yourself waking up with itchy skin, red or crusty eyes as well as congested, the constant air flow from your indoor fan is the likely culprit.
