Small Town of 1,000 Residents Named Lobster ‘Capital’ of Maine
There a lot of towns and cities throughout Maine that have seen substantial changes over the last several decades.
Those changes could include a population bump, increased housing and development and new businesses scattered throughout town.
But there's also a handful of towns throughout Maine that really haven't changed much in the last few decades. Maybe some names on storefronts are different but the town still feels about the same.
One of those places is Stonington, Maine. A small coastal community of just over 1,000 year-round residents. The backbone of the town is the lobstering and fishing industry.
And now it's been named the unofficial lobster 'capital' of Maine.
Stonington, Maine Remains a Powerhouse in Lobster Hauls
According to Mashed, while other coastal cities may pull in more lobster overall, Stonington's fleet of lobster hunters amassed more than $50 million in hauls as recently as 2023.

Given the town's small population, that's an astounding number.
As you'll see with many coastal communities, there are lobstermen selling direct to consumers from their home base. If you're looking for the true definition of freshly caught to freshly eaten, you'll find it in Stonington.
The town is home to a co-op for summer visitors where they can pick and choose from the day's ocean harvest.
Stonington, Maine, is Also Home to Some Excellent Restaurants
Given the small year-round population and short summer season, operating a restaurant in Stonington can be a challenge.
But if you're visiting the town for a delicious meal, there are great options that don't require you to stray far from the town's main street.

That includes 27 Fathoms, a restaurant that overlooks the ocean and serves up a menu filled with seafood options.
There's also Fin and Fern, a restaurant that sits adjacent to the ocean and prides itself on a large menu centered around coastal Maine dining.
