If You Want Cops to Pull You Over, This Maine License Plate Should Do the Trick
Most Mainers have probably picked up on the fact that vanity license plates have not had a whole lot of restrictions over the last several years, and essentially have fallen in line with the freedom of speech principle.
Some Mainers were having fun using different combinations using both letters and numbers to spell out something really funny and clever (or just using flat-out inappropriate and/or offensive words). It wasn't confirmed, but I'm assuming that multiple complaints lead the State of Maine to begin banning certain license plates in the fall of 2022.
I would love to know whose job it was to go through the entire data base to flag plates that could be deemed offensive, and what were the keywords used in order to retrieve them. That information is unknown, but according to NBC News, the state specifically picked out 274 vanity plates registered to Maine drivers to be recalled.
According to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles page of Maine.gov, the rules and regulations are that any combination of letters and numbers that promote violence are prohibited. I'm not sure this Maine license plate falls in that category, but it is sure to offend a group of people while making another group of people chuckle.
Whatever side of aisle that you happen to fall on, my question is who would put this on their car? This appears to me as an open invitation to get pulled over or at least followed by a police cruiser.
