‘Sea-Sick’ of New England Whale Watches? How About a Moose Tour?
You think you know New Hampshire? You know nothing.
When I say you, I mean me. Here I am, thinking that I'm a New Hampshire native, but I did not know that there was such a thing as a "moose tour" until today. Not only is it a thing, but there are lots of places all around the state and region that offer them.
Moose Tours Have Been Going on in New Hampshire for 25 years
Pemi Valley Moose Tours has been giving tours since 1999, and they go out about 120-130 times per year. They also have a 90% success rate spotting these huge creatures. Prime moose-spotting hours are around dawn and dusk, according to Maine.gov.
Did you know the moose was part of the deer family?
Moose can stand up to seven feet tall. An average female moose weighs about 830 pounds, and the males weigh 1,100 pounds on average. I admit, they kind of scare me. It's because of all those signs on the highway when you are traveling north on 89 that say, "BE CAREFUL DRIVING, MOOSE CAN KILL YOU!" Okay, maybe that's not exactly what it says, but that's how my brain interprets this sign.
It is a little less scary when you remember that moose are vegetarians, and have no desire to eat you. They may, however, step on you by accident.
Moose tours are SO New Hampshire.... and Maine
If you have no fear of being stepped on, decide that you want to go on a moose tour, and are then lucky enough to see one, it may be one of the most unforgettable adventures of your life. The guides will have lots of knowledge about moose, and will know the best ways to spot the elusive animal. Lucky for us, there are several places that offer these tours. Here are three that I found:
- Northeast White Water in Shirley Mills, Maine
- Pemi Valley Moose Tours in Lincoln, New Hampshire
- Gorham Moose Tours in Gorham, New Hampshire
What's next? Deer drives? Porcupine picnics? Bear browsing? These actually sound like fun excursions that I'm sure you could convince me to go on, except for the deer drives. I do that one every morning when they decide to walk right in front of my car.
