New Hampshire Strawberry Pick Your Own

Strawberry picking is one of the best parts of summer.  The joy of picking a fruit from the ground (hopefully one that's not been squished) and popping it into your mouth is a wonderful experience.  It's getting a little late in the season, so if you're looking for something to do over the weekend, this might be really fun for you and your family.

Here are a few places in the area that, according to their website, still have strawberry picking available.  Even with that, you might want to call first.

• Butternut Farm, 195 Meaderboro Road, Farmington, NH
• Cider Hill Farm, 45 Fern Avenue, Amesbury, MA
• Boston Hill Farm, 1370 Turnpike Street, North Andover, MA

According to their website, strawberry season is closed at Applecrest Farm in Hampton.

Here are some things to remember when going strawberry picking:

• Make sure you wear comfortable clothes.  You are going to be bending over a lot and jumping from row to row.  If not jumping, then taking really big steps.
• Remember the sunscreen, or better yet, wear a hat.  You'll be having fun and won't realize that your skin is getting burned.
• Pick more than you think you'll need.  You know you'll eat some on the way home, and if you squish them up for strawberry shortcake, a whole pile of berries is reduced quite a bit.

Have fun!  This is one of my favorite things to do in the whole wide world.  My family had a strawberry patch when I was a little kid in Hollis, New Hampshire, and the ONLY time that the taste is close to what it used to be is by picking them at a local farm.
