Maine’s Most Popular Street for Trick or Treating Won’t Close This Year
Halloween is closer than you think, and one of the most popular places in Maine to trick-or-treat has major changes this year.
WMTW reported that the town of Kennebunk won't be closing down Summer Street to traffic this year.
If you've ever been Halloweening in Kennbunk, you know how popular Summer Street is. But this closing has never been an official town or Chamber of Commerce event.
Don't worry, Summer Street in Kennebunk, Maine, will still do it up for Halloween
There will be trick-or-treating throughout town with dozens of businesses getting in on the fun, and that includes Summer Street. Most of the residents in this Victorian and mansion neighborhood still plan to set up elaborate decorations, but Kennebunk says that after they met with people who live on Summer Street, they decided to keep the road open.
Why won't Summer Street in Kennebunk, Maine shut down this year for Halloween?
Kennebunk says (and it's a good point) that a lot of people who live on the street had a hard time dealing with not being able to get to their homes for hours on Halloween. Plus, the cost of getting so much candy to handle the crowds was getting out of control. On top of that, some of the people who originally organized Halloween on Summer Street have moved.

The town also said that the Maine Department of Transportation has stricter regulations on state road closures, which includes Summer Street, part of Route 35.
However, the Maine Department of Transportation's director of communications said in an email that they have not imposed stricter regulations for closures and their rules haven’t changed for years. The director added that their department did not play any role in the town's decision.
And last but not least, another reason Summer Street in Kennebunk, Maine WON'T be closing for Halloween is that neighboring streets saw fewer and fewer trick-or-treaters because they were all heading over to Summer Street!
So still head to Summer Street this year, just be careful with all the traffic.
Correction: An earlier version of this article reported that the town of Kennebunk said the Maine Department of Transportation has stricter rules for state road closures. However, the Maine Department of Transportation's director of communications refuted that claim saying they haven't changed their rules for years and they did not play any role in the town's decision.
