I’m really good about getting the flu shot every year as I live in a petri dish with three kids, and I need the protection!  The other day I noticed a new urgent care just over the Casco Bay Bridge in South Portland, AFC Urgent Care. I decided to walk-in and give them a try and I’m so glad I did.

The center was beautiful and very clean. I was offered coffee and tea, the check-in was super easy and there was no waiting. And the staff was terrific! I got my flu shot and was on my way in no time.

While I was there, I learned it takes two weeks for your body to develop immune protection after having received the vaccine so the sooner you get it, the better. Especially since the flu season is already upon us and it will likely continue into February. AFC Urgent Care has already diagnosed one patient with the flu.

The Centers for Disease Control recommends that everyone ages six months and older get vaccinated, but it's especially important for seniors ages 65 and older, pregnant women, children younger than 2 and people with chronic conditions such as asthma, heart disease and diabetes.

And AFC Urgent Care urges people to get their flu shots reiterating “the flu is a serious and potentially fatal disease." Since 2010, the Centers for Disease Control estimate anywhere between 140,000 and 170,000 people are hospitalized for the flu each year.

While I hope my family and I will not be in need care, but if we are, I wouldn’t hesitate to go to AFC Urgent Care for their expert care that’s quick and affordable. It’s a great alternative to waiting for an appointment with my PCP or kid’s pediatrician. And it sure beats the ER!

AFC Urgent Care can treat most non-life-threatening acute illnesses and injuries. No appointment or referral is needed, most insurances are accepted and the average wait is less than 10 minutes. Here are just some of things they treat:
