Who says you can't have ice cream in the winter?

Sometimes you crave a scoop of mint chocolate chip or rocky road while the temperature outside is screaming, "It's bitter cold out here! Go inside."

Nope. Not even a wicked freezing season can cool your passion for a sweet treat most people enjoy during the summer, and thankfully, there are a few places in Maine that can help you out.

Fielder's Choice

In 2021, Fielder's Choice announced on Facebook that it would be keeping its shops open all winter long. And that idea is staying strong.

You can get your winter ice cream fix at one of its six spots: Manchester, Brunswick, Sabattus, Auburn, Bangor, and Old Orchard Beach.

The Maine-based ice cream establishment shared on its website that the hours and days will vary by location.

For example, the Brunswick location is open every day from noon to 8 p.m., but they are taking a short break from December 22 through January 22.

On the other hand, the Auburn location is open every day from noon to 8 p.m. but is only off December 24 and 25.

Be sure to check their site for up-to-date seasonal info depending on which place you choose to visit.

The Ice Cream Shoppe

Another place with a variety of locations is The Ice Cream Shoppe.

However, only the Oakland location is open during the winter.

According to the Ice Cream Shoppe's Facebook page, the front window is closed, but the drive-through and dine-in options are available.

The Skowhegan, Randolph, and Farmington spots will open again next season.

Mount Desert Island Ice Cream

Sorry, but the Bar Harbor location for Mount Desert Island Ice Cream is closed for the season.

But, hold up, because the Portland spot is open through December, according to a Facebook post from the business.

They also note there will be a short break in January and February before they return.

There's still time to get some artisanal ice cream before the year ends.

Le’Cha Cafe

Another Portland spot where you can get a frozen treat is Le'Cha Cafe.

According to the Portland Press Herald, this bubble tea and ice cream shop opened in 2023 and is offering colorful ice cream options year-round.

The Saco Scoop

In Saco, The Saco Scoop shared its winter hours on Facebook but also revealed that it's still open every single day.

There are over 30 flavors to choose from, including cake butter, bubblegum and even one called Hakuna Matata, a chocolate ice cream with a caramel swirl and chocolate chips.

If you can't decide on just one, there's even an ice cream flight you can try.

Friendly's

There's only one Friendly's left in the state of Maine, but it is still slinging scoops daily.

That means during the hot summer months and the crisp cool winter season you can get ice cream.

Dairy Queen

Here's one more chain location in Maine where you can get ice cream in the winter.

There are 22 Dairy Queen spots in the state, however, some of them do close for the season.

Your best bet is to check Dairy Queen's website for the specific place's hours and openings when you really want that Blizzard.

Places like the Maine Street in Westbrook location, the Bangor Street in Augusta location or the York Street in Kennebunk location are open for treat orders in the winter.

There's no need to let freezing temperatures get in the way of a delicious dessert, so bundle up and brave the cold for some ice cream. You've got a variety of options.
