Well that hurts. WalletHub released their least of the most innovative states in the country and bad news for Mainers, Vacationland ranked amongst the worst. In their research, WalletHub used a number of different factors to make their assessment, some of which do not shine a positive light on Maine. Let's take a closer look:

MAINE RANKS LOW IN STEM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, MATH) JOB DEMAND

One one hand, this looks bad for new businesses popping up and old businesses expanding in these fields. On the other hand, it also looks bad because those businesses may not be able to find the qualified candidates they need. In case you were wondering, our neighbors in Massachusetts rank #5 in STEM job demand.

MAINE IS AMONGST THE WORST STATES IN SHARE OF TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES

As technology jobs continue to become more lucrative and in-demand, Maine continues to slip further down the list of availability of those jobs. Fresh out of college looking for a hot tech job? Probably won't find one here unfortunately.

MAINE HAS ONE OF THE SLOWEST INTERNET SPEEDS IN THE COUNTRY

Apparently the internet thinks we're part of Canada! All kidding aside, Maine is in the bottom percentile for internet speeds and that may be another factor in the lack of expansion or growth for tech companies in the state.

There are several other factors that landed Maine as 42nd most innovative state in the country. Or if you want to flip that around, Maine is 9th least innovative state. Yikes.
