Unfortunately, there have been a handful of Maine restaurants that have had to close their doors just last month.

In fact, a number of eateries across the state that ended their run in May 2026 cited financial hardship as a key factor in the closings.

From longstanding pubs around since the '90s to a lounge that only recently opened in 2025, these businesses all faced the difficult reality that keeping the doors open was no longer possible.

As much fun as it can be to see new restaurants pop up in Maine, on the flip side is a certain level of sadness to hearing the news that a place has to close.

I continue to marvel at the people brave enough to take on the difficult task of running a restaurant and the various hurdles and challenges thrown at them. It's no easy task, and countless places haven't been able to stay afloat despite their best efforts.

So it's certainly not some easy path to take. And while some do find success and can build off that for years and years, many eventually have to end their restaurant chapter.

Let's take a look at some that closed in May.

It's interesting to note that for two of the places, Broadway Bowl and Standard Gastropub, there was still at least a positive you could hang your hat on.

While you can't grab a bite to eat and bowl at the South Portland location anymore, there is the sister spot, Bayside Bowl in Portland. And while the Bridgton gastropub ended its particular chapter, it got a rebrand opening that quickly followed, offering some old classics while exploring new ones as well as The Last Chair.

Mulligan's and North Star Lounge don't quite have that same route. The owner of the decades-long pub noted that it had been on borrowed time, and ultimately, the financial difficulties became too much. Similarly, the short-lived lounge faced its own money challenges as well as the stressful and emotional toll of trying to run a business.

And that is something that can sometimes be missed behind the food and the service and the memories. It's the people behind it all, working hard to make it all work.

Sometimes it pans out, and it's a glorious success for years to come, and other times, a restaurant just can't seem to draw the right cards to win the hand.

Regardless, for the places that do close, it's worth remembering them not just for how they ended, but for the role they played in their communities while their doors were open.

Which closed place do you miss the most?
