Maine Woman’s Neck Tattoo Disqualifies Her From Enlisting

The rule would allow a man to have a tattoo in that area, but not a woman.

In what appears to be a case of unintentional discrimination, a Maine woman might not be able to enlist in the Marines because of a tattoo.

The area of the tattoo (her lower neck/upper chest) would be covered by a men's uniform, but not by a woman's. Therefore, a woman with a tattoo in that area would be violating the rules set regarding tattoos.

What the tattoo says is actually a very positive and inspiring message:

 "Let your smile change the world but never let the world change you"

Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) wrote to Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Robert Neller on her behalf, asking that the decision be reconsidered.
