Most Extreme Temps Rec’d In Maine, New Hampshire & Massachusetts

So far, this winter, we have had really mild temperatures.  Sure, this morning was a little chilly (9 degrees in Augusta), but for the most part, we have had nearly spring-like temperatures.  Clearly, most winters are not like this.

If you have lived in New England for very long, you have probably realized that we have a wide variety of weather.  Sure, they say, "If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes" about nearly everywhere in the country.  But, in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and the rest of the New England states, that phrase is accurate!

There is a large portion of the year where you need to dress is layers because of how much the temperatures change throughout the day.  Hoodie in the morning, t-shirt in the afternoon, jacket in the evening.

But, what about extreme temperatures in the state?

According to Stacker, these are the most extreme temperatures and amounts of precipitation ever recorded in Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.

MAINE

- All-time highest temperature: 105° F recorded at North Bridgton on July 10, 1911
- All-time lowest temperature: -50° F Big Black River on Jan. 16, 2009
- All-time highest 24-hour precipitation: 13.32 inches recorded at the Portland Jetport in October of 1996
- All-time highest 24-hour snowfall: 40 inches Orono on Dec. 30, 1962

NEW HAMPSHIRE

- All-time highest temperature: 106° F Nashua on July 4, 1911
- All-time lowest temperature: -50° F Recorded at the summit of Mount Washington on Jan. 22, 1885
- All-time highest 24-hour precipitation: 11.07 inches that was recorded on top of Mount Washington on Oct.20–21, 1996
- All-time highest 24-hour snowfall: 49.3 inches (Mount Washington on Feb. 25, 1969

MASSACHUSETTS

- All-time highest temperature: 107° F recorded in Chester on August 2, 1975
- All-time lowest temperature: -35° F recorded in Coldbrook on February 15, 1943
- All-time highest 24-hour precipitation: 18.15 inches Westfield on Aug. 18–19, 1955
- All-time highest 24-hour snowfall: 29 inches Natick on April 1, 1997

Not surprisingly, the lowest temperatures and most most precipitation was recorded at the summit of Mount Washington.   At 6,280 feet, Mount Washington is New England's highest peak.

The most rainfall was recorded across the same time period for both Maine and New Hampshire.  The rain was recorded on October 20th and October 21st of 1996.  There is a good chance this was as a result of Hurricane Lili.
