The winds in Maine on Saturday, October 12, were pretty strong. Lots of leaves came off their branches and some of the gusts were strong.

According to WMTW 8 meteorologist Emily Pike, northwest winds were recorded in Maine between 10 and 25 mph, with gusts reaching as high as 45 mph to 50 mph in some locations.

I was traveling to New Hampshire with my girlfriend Michele and her family to go leaf-peeping along the Kancamagus Highway that travels through the White Mountain National Forest. When we got to the Naples Causeway that carries Route 302 over the water between Long Lake and Brandy Pond, we looked over the lake to see what looked more like an angry sea, with waves washing up on the causeways's sidewalks and road.

I parked and got out of the car to capture a quick video of it.

Of course in the time it took me to shoot 30 seconds of video, no water splashed up onto the causeway, but trust me on this one. It was a big splash as I got out of the car. I have no idea how strong the winds were, but it was enough to create large white caps headed southeast on Long Lake.

If you've ever driven over the Naples Causeway, you've probably noticed a very large flag on the east end of the causeway. The flag is 28x30 feet and raised on a 77-foot pole. Three people raise and lower it to ensure it does not touch the ground.

That massive flag was flying straight out, something I've never seen it do before, but it looked awesome.
