For some in Maine, the only place they've ever known to turn to for sporting goods and apparel has been Olympia Sports. The chain, which started back in 1975 with their first store in the Maine Mall, eventually spread out across the state of Maine and a portion of the country. But with the ever-changing ways all of us shop, time seems to be enemy of many brick-and-mortar retailers. And time has come for Olympia Sports as the Bangor Daily News is reporting the company has been sold and more than half of their retail locations are set to close.

Olympia Sports has been sold to JackRabbit, a California-based retailer that specializes in active wear. JackRabbit currently operates 62 stores across 18 states and plans to have roughly 135 stores operational soon. As of the sale, Olympia Sports had 150 locations. A quick look at the math suggests that more than half of the Olympia Sports locations could be liquidated.

In a press release, Olympia Sports and JackRabbit did not announce which specific Olympia Sports locations in Maine would close. Olympia did state that customers will begin to see liquidation signs in some stores very soon.
