As the old saying goes, "April showers bring May flowers". Unfortunately for most of Maine, April wasn't just showers, but also incredibly unsatisfying temperatures that never seemed to make it out of the 50's. For northern Maine, it was even worse. The area consistently saw freezing temperatures overnight and was dealt a handful of snowstorms. There's good news on the horizon. After what feels like 3 months of middling temperatures, a preview of summer appears to be on its way next, and it's looking like it'll bring the heat.

Shared on Twitter by Keith Carson, the majority of Maine should be prepared to bust out the sunscreen and shorts as temperatures should easily eclipse 70 degrees, next Wednesday and Thursday. Some places may even reach 80. That'll feel like a different planet to everyone who has been suffering through months of 50-degree highs. But it's not all sunshine and rainbows. The coastal cities and towns in Maine may still face the spring heat vacuum, as forecast models are still calling for low-to-mid 60's while everyone else is getting torched. That could change as the weather pattern comes more into focus over the next few days.

Regardless of whether the coast gets a taste of the heat, this mini-heat wave won't even approach the record-breaking heat that was delivered in 1992. According to PlantMaps, the heat wave that roiled into Maine on May 22nd of 1992 delivered mid-90 degree heat to a large portion of the state. It remains the highest temperature ever recorded in May for cities like Bangor, Belfast, and Augusta.
