This Amazing Waterfall is Just Outside Maine’s Largest City
Starting in Portland, Maine, and ending in Falmouth, Maine, is one of the most beautiful trails with a waterfall!
The Presumpscot River flows from Sebago Lake to its outlet at Casco Bay. According to Portland Trails, they (along with the City of Portland Landbank Commission) teamed up with the state’s Land for Maine’s Future program to save this beautiful piece of land along the river by creating a 48-acre public nature preserve.
An easy, gorgeous hike that starts in Portland, Maine
I had no idea that Maine's largest city had such a beautiful preserve! The trail I went on followed a deep ravine away from the residential neighborhood and into the preserve. The trail is steep in places. You can bring your dog, but I didn't, because I was afraid of ticks. Once the trail reaches the river’s edge (you'll hear it before you see it), signs guide you to some pretty amazing views.
This property is owned collaboratively between the City of Portland, the City of Falmouth, Portland Trails, and private landowners. When you get to private property, you have to be respectful.
You do NOT have to kayak over the falls.
I suppose you could give it a try. I would not. There is a place to get out and portage your kayak beyond the falls. The falls are such a surprise, and truly beautiful. This video does not do it justice, but it's a little taste of the hike you should definitely do.
If you find yourself in the Portland area and want to venture out, this is a must.
