Here’s Why Mainer’s are Painting Purple Polka Dots on the Streets of Portland
This is so cute. What a creative idea to help promote safety among streets that have seemingly felt a little bit... well, less safe lately.
If you're driving along Marginal Way in Portland anytime soon, make sure you're paying extra close attention to the road you're cruisin' on because you're about to see some painted polka dots!
According to WGME, Portland Trails and the Bicycle Coalition of Maine are responsible for the adorable purple warning signs.
The news station reported that they've painted polka dots on the side of the road as a suggested sidewalk, to make up for the lack of curbs in the area to walk on.
I can absolutely vouch for the times I've been on a walk with my dog and ran out of sidewalk feeling a bit out there.
WGME reported that Portland Trails noted the heavy foot traffic in the area due to the shops and breweries but "not a lot to slow down drivers."
This reminds me of the murals that were painted last summer in Portland near Yosaku with the same intention. Little things like this make Portland, Portland and I love to see it.
Portland Trails and Transportation Manager Jaime Parker told WGME, "We sort of wanted to build on the work that Bicycle Coalition had done and elevate the presence of pedestrians on the street".
