Should New England Patriots Fans Care That Tom Brady Retired Again?
Stop me if you've heard this one before.
Tom Brady retired.
And actually, don't stop me. Because as a person that stood up to the Brady haters when he decided to leave the New England Patriots back in early 2020 to head to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, I think I earned the right to say this next sentence.
New England shouldn't care that Brady retired...again.
Back when Tom first retired literally one year ago today on February 1, 2022, he got a mixed reaction from New England. The 20 years he spent as part of the Patriots were probably the two most exciting, consecutive decades of football in New England in a while.
Naturally, there were New Englanders that were sad to see him retire. Hell, some of them had never known a life without TB12 playing football. But other New Englanders? They were pissed.
Because one year ago, in his official retirement announcement on Instagram, he went in depth thanking the Tampa Bay Buccaneers teammates, suits, and fans -- without one word mentioned about New England.
Brady's Retirement Video
To his credit, since he wrote a 6-page essay on Instagram a year ago when he first retired, Brady kept it brief this morning when he announced his second retirement, even mentioning that he already used up his "one, emotional retirement speech last year."
And while I respect the fact that he actually showed love to the first 20 years of his career this time around in the pictures that followed that video, and respect the fact that when he started mentioning the love he has for his family he got emotional -- we've done this before.
Actually, we've done it two times before.
We first said a goodbye to Tom back in 2020 when he announced he was leaving the Pats for the Bucs. We said another goodbye one year ago today when he announced his first retirement -- even though he somehow brainfarted on where he spent two decades of his career.
And now, here were are for the third time with a reason to say goodbye. And honestly, it's old news at this point. How many times are we going to have to say goodbye to Tom freakin Brady? G.O.A.T. or not (and make no mistake, regardless of the fact that this whole article is about how we shouldn't care that he's retiring again -- he's still the G.O.A.T. and no one can even touch that.)
Will Brady Retire as a Patriot?
All that said -- there's only one thing that New England should care about when it comes to Brady's retirement. If he signs a one-day deal with the New England Patriots to officially retire as a member of the Pats.
It should happen. It needs to happen. And even if we're burnt out on hearing about Brady and all his retirements, I think it's something we all want to happen. But for whatever reason, I have a nagging feeling it won't...
Not for a while, anyway. If at all.
