South Portland, Maine Cheer Program Takes Home First Place in US Competition
The Port City Athletics cheer program had a stunning performance this month at a national competition where they were crowned 2022 champions.
The Cairo Crew of athletes traveled to Florida to compete in the D2 Summit Championship at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World Resort. Over 1000 teams comprised of over 17,000 athletes participated at the D2 Summit in front of over 25,000 spectators between May 6th and 8th.
The team earned first place in the level 3 Senior Coed Division with a score of 97.7 giving them an undefeated 2021-2022 season.
Pretty impressive stuff!
Cheering is certainly not what it was when I was in high school. It wasn't until the 1980s that modern cheering began to become popular. It wasn't just shaking pom-poms and building pyramids anymore. All-Star teams were created with no affiliation with schools and anyone could learn and train to cheer. Athletes begin the sport at young ages too, as young as 3-years-old, similar to other sports like Little League baseball or pee-wee soccer. Through the years, athletes hone their crafts and present high-energy, gymnastic and stunting performances that take rigorous training to perfect, which is where programs like Port City Athletics offers come in.
To give you an idea of how good these teams are, here's a performance from the D2 Summit featuring Port City Athletics Phantom 5 crew.
Congratulations to all of the teams that competed down in Orlando this month. It's definitely an experience you'll remember for a lifetime.
