Sometimes it seems like we lose sight of just what Memorial Day means in our country. When you think of Memorial Day, you think of the unofficial start of summer. You think a three-day weekend. You think of getting together with family and friends to grill, camp, fish, or go boating. You think of shopping with sales as the stores. There is a store in Maine that did not forget what Memorial Day means for us as a Nation and demonstrated that beautifully with one of their parking spaces.

As I stopped at Lowe's in Windham to run it to grab something real quick, I saw an American flag in a parking space that got my attention. That seemed odd.

When I walked up to it though it became perfectly clear what this was and it made me pause a moment, as we all should on Memorial Day.

This simple gesture of symbolically reserving a parking space for the military members who we have lost is powerful.

I'm as guilty of it as anyone. Getting caught up in the activities of a long weekend, enjoying time with my friends, and enjoying a Monday off, made me forget what this day actually means. To those at Lowe's in Windham that created this tribute and memorial, thank you for showing us all how and why we remember our fallen military members. It makes me truly proud to be an American.
