The East Millinocket Police Department couldn't have described it better when they were called to the transfer station and saw a car in the hopper: "Things you don't see every day."

Some poor driver ended up getting their car balanced perfectly over the trash hopper and compactor where resident dump their trash to be disposed of. Typically though, they don't throw entire cars into the hopper.

If your town has a transfer station, you know how the drill goes. You back your vehicle up the hopper and dump your trash in. The compactor packs it down until it's full and is emptied onto a truck.

Police didn't give the details of how the car ended up in the hopper, but it this may have been the classic gas instead of the brake while backing up to the hopper.

The driver was still in the vehicle when East Millinocket Police arrived and they were couldn't get out because there was no place for them to stand over the bin. The Fire Department did manage to get the driver out without harm, but there were likely some very scary moments for them.

Getting the car out was another challenge. A local tow truck company was called in and in what looked like a delicate maneuver, lifted the car up out of the bin.
