Zombies ruled Monument Square in Portland, Maine recently.

It was Portland's 12th 'Thriller Throwdown' on Friday, October 25. According to WGME-13 Lead Undead Kristin Goodwin Sutton, says it was the biggest one ever.

How many zombies were dancing in Portland, Maine

Nearly 200 zombies from as young as 12 years old to 70 years old danced to Michael Jackson's Halloween anthem, 'Thriller'. That's twice as many people as last year, making this their biggest one ever. It just keeps getting bigger and bigger every year.

How did 200 people learn to do the 'Thriller' dance for this Portland, Maine flash mob?

They took classes and practiced and practiced. You had to register to get into the class and hundreds did! The choreography was taught methodically so that even people with two left feet felt confident as zombies with rhythm. You must be at least 12 years old to take the class and it comes with video tutorials too! If you are a returning zombie, you could just pop in, but those learning for the first time had to register at least a month in advance.

There were a total of 5 one hour classes and then you practice on your own and zombie it up on your own. There are videos of friends getting together in open places and practicing. Sounds fun, doesn't it? Keep an eye on the Thriller Throwdown events page. Look for some zombie action to kick back up in September 2025!
