Are There Hostels in New England?

Hostels are mostly a European thing but we do have them here in New England. I had never considered staying in a hostel in the United States before traveling to Europe and getting a taste of the backpacking life.

Now, I look at hostels in the areas I travel to before I even think about a hotel.

What is a Hostel?

Hostels are small, budget-friendly accommodations that cater to backpackers and solo travelers, especially internationally and in Europe. They offer bunk beds in shared rooms for extremely low prices with communal spaces.

Most places also offer private room accommodations for a pricier option but most of the time you’ll find folks staying in the dorm rooms. This is a really cool and fascinating way to meet people as you travel the world. You can stay at hostels for long periods of time but they are mostly for short-term visits.

The greatest experiences I have ever had traveling have been in hostels and I have met the best people from around the world during my stays.

Why Stay in a Hostel?

There are countless reasons why you should choose hostels when traveling but I will just name a personal few. When traveling alone or with a small pair or group, it makes it so easy to meet new friends to explore places with, have a meal together, share stories, and add to the cultural experience.

They are safe spaces that are so helpful if you want ideas or suggestions for what to do in the area or places to visit next. But most of all, it makes traveling accessible to those who otherwise may not be able to afford it. I spent time in Venice, Italy for only $10 per night!!

Hostels in New England

I used to only look at hostels when I planned a trip abroad but now I look at local options even when I’m just traveling a few states over. I didn’t even know Maine had hostels but we do have a couple!

In case you’re curious about hostel life or want an affordable option when traveling, I’ve pulled together a list of some hostels in Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.
