Walgreens announced back in June 2023 that it would be closing 150 stores across the country. Now, we've learned that the Walgreens on Main Street in Lewiston near Central Maine Medical Center will close on February 27.

This Walgreens location was previously a Rite Aid until Walgreens bought Rite Aid out of most of its stores in 2017 and rebranded them as Walgreens. Before Rite Aid, I believe the building was either a LaVerdiere's, which Rite Aid bought out in the early '90s, or a small Shop 'n Save. Feel free to correct me on this if I am not remembering exactly.

This entire area on Main Street has seen a bit of a decline as Sam's Italian Foods closed its flagship store after 83 years there. Dunkin', which was next to Walgreens, moved up the street to a new location. Both of these businesses were very convenient to CMMC across the street, as both families of patients visiting and employees could make a stop to get some food or pick up a prescription and a few essentials.

According to the Sun Journal, the Walgreens on Union Street in Auburn was also a victim of the closures in October.

Before the announcement that 150 stores would be closed, Walgreens planned to build a larger store by purchasing the site of the now-abandoned Dunkin', but that plan is now canceled. The Sabattus Street location is now the closest Walgreens to the Main Street location.
