Woman Accidentally Drives on Westbrook, Maine Pedestrian Bridge

This breaks my heart. An elderly woman not from the area became confused in Westbrook and drove onto a pedestrian bridge.

Matt Lebel shared a photo on Facebook that his daughter took of a car sitting on the pedestrian bridge in Westbrook, which crosses over Westbrook Arterial from Lawrence Street to Stroudwater Street at Westbrook High School.

When you look at the entrance to the pedestrian bridge, you can see how someone not from the area might think it's a bridge for vehicles.

Lawrence Street dead ends right where the footpath to the pedestrian bridge entrance begins. The bridge is just barely wide enough to accommodate a car.

Matt tells me his daughter called the Westbrook Police Department and went to the bridge with he friends to help. The woman was just confused and was more worried that her husband would be upset that she scratched the car.

Luckily she was okay and the police department helped her get safely off the bridge, but I feel for her. Maybe more signage at the pedestrian bridge to bring more attention to drivers letting them know the bridge is not for cars would help situations like this.

In the days before GPS, I took wrong turns many a time and ended up in places where I had no idea where I was.

One time I pulled up to a house, knocked on the door expecting to see a friend of mine, and quickly realized I was at the wrong house when the person opened the door asking what I wanted. Yikes.
