An investigation is underway in Auburn to see exactly what happened to an unidentified woman after two fisherman found a body floating in the pond named 'The Basin' off of Holebrook Road in Auburn.

According to the Press Herald Scott Peters of Lewiston said he and his friend Jim Hixman of Auburn were preparing to launch their canoe early Sunday morning when they saw what they thought was a plastic bag floating about 20 feet offshore.

Hixman then paddled out and saw a woman's body floating face down. He quickly returned to shore and the two men called police.

When Auburn police arrived on scene they borrowed the fisherman's canoe to inspect the scene. When they returned to shore they asked the men to leave. Later that morning the body was brought to shore and the area was closed off and treated like a crime scene.

No further information has been made available awaiting the autopsy.
